Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Financial Advisor
Before hiring a financial advisor, ask how they are paid, what they are licensed to do, who regulates them, who their typical client is, and what working together looks like month to month. Below are the questions we think every prospective client should ask, with Focused Financial Group's answers, so you can compare us to anyone else you are considering.
How are you compensated?
Our advisors may be compensated through commissions on insurance and investment products, through fees on advisory accounts, or both, depending on the services you choose. Our Form CRS, linked at the bottom of every page, explains the options and the conflicts of interest that come with each. We walk through it with you before you decide.
What licenses and registrations do you hold?
Our financial advisors are registered representatives of Principal Securities, Inc. and hold FINRA securities registrations and state insurance licenses, listed on each advisor's bio. You can verify any of them on FINRA's BrokerCheck, also linked at the bottom of every page.
Who regulates you?
Securities activity is regulated by FINRA and the SEC through Principal Securities, Inc., a broker-dealer and investment adviser. Insurance is regulated by the Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner and the insurance departments of the other states where we are licensed.
Who is your typical client?
Business owners, executives and families in metro Atlanta, often at a point of change: a business sale, a new job, a new child, retirement within ten years, or the loss of a spouse. We do not have a minimum account size; what matters is that you want a plan.
What will you actually do for me?
Build a written plan around your goals, implement it with you, and review it on a set schedule. See Our Process for the five steps. We coordinate with your CPA and attorney and do not replace them.
What happens if my advisor retires or leaves?
You work with one advisor but the practice is a team of three advisors and an office staff, all in one location, with a continuity plan so clients are not left without a contact.
How often will we talk?
Reviews are quarterly, semi-annual or annual depending on your needs, with calls in between when something changes. You can always reach the office at 770-250-7588.
Can I see a sample plan or your process before I commit?
Yes. The first meeting is a conversation with no obligation, and we are glad to show you what a plan looks like before you decide anything.
